I understand why they must be presented side-by-side– music theory has a history of dogmatism and quasi-political debate.

Schoenberg’s approach, both in terms of harmony and development, is among the major landmarks of 20th-century musical thought; at least three generations of composers in the European and American traditions schpenberg consciously extended his thinking or, in some cases, passionately reacted against it. This work really must be read over an extended period of time– I found it quite difficult to read for long sittings– and the reader should expect to skip over sections.
