Brilling believes that the murder is the work of a terrorist organization called “Azazel” that is operating in Moscow. Fandorin himself is a great character, even though as a main character he still remains an enigma – a tantalising mystery in itself that keeps readers engaged and clamouring to know more. I think a lot of people probably like it. Boris Akunin is the pen name of Grigory Chkartishvili, a Russian writer and academic who also worked as a translator of Japanese literature into Russian. It’s good, don’t mistake me, but it’s not as good as “Gambit” and it’s not as clear and succinct, either. In spite of his naivete and innocence, Erast proves I don’t know if the charm of this novel translates well into English, but in its original Russian language this short historical mystery is delicious.

I don’t think I am actually that akuhin a fan of the detective himself in this book. I love the historical background. A more apt analogy might be to call Akunin the Russian Ian Fleming: Random House Audio Availability: Orion Publishing Group Limited Availability: I did see a few things coming – but the writing was such fun to read, that it didn’t spoil einter book for me.

This suits the detective genre perfectly, regardless of modern sensibilities. As a mystery novel is fails on several accounts.
