Ddith read East when it first came out about 15 years ago and absolutely loved it. Rose was a little in awe of her, even. Time for a little pop-the-cork happy dance!! Charles literally hears his baby call Rose Maman and doesn’t put two and two together. One night, however, Rose lights the candle and sees that Bear transforms into a handsome young man at night.


In the morning, he disappears before Rose wakes up and can see his true form. East is my all time favorite book, so I will probably preorder this sequel when it becomes available.

The pattou is written in a style similar to that of Brian Jacquesincluding the use of a change in point of view in each chapter. Told in short multi-voiced segments, Pattou adds shipwrecks, plague, avalanches and a fascinating variety of tales, folklore and trials to this story of steadfast love. And so, when a sequel was announced, some 15 years after the publication of East, to say I was excited might have been a huge understatement.


I think when it’s time for Christmas, a lot of people are going to find this book in their stocking. West picks up three years after the end of East. Upon finding out that there pattoou some mysterious man sleeping with Rose at night, her mother gives her a candle and flint and tells her to use them and discover who Bear really is. On the day of the wedding, Myk requests that the Troll Queen honor the customs of his people by washing his shirt for him. Then there’s Charles and Rose’s magic super baby.

The strong connection between Rose and Charles is challenged, but their determination and devotion to one another is clear. I feel I should preface this with the fact that East has been my actual favorite book since I read it when it came out in If you had mixed feelings about His Dark Materials, but still really like polar bears and legends from the far north?

The pace, which should’ve been fast, at least, from the whiplash-style narration, went at a sluggish crawl, leaving me bored throughout. Well, apparently that includes its sequel. And then, there’s the relationship between Rose and the white bear. This guy needs so much rescuing that at one point a magical being with very little connection to him has to turn him back into a polar bear so he doesn’t freaking drown. It was clean as a whistle, though. This companion novel is a perfect addition to fan’s libraries. The chapters weren’t long so you could just fly through the book with no esat.
