Well i had to put win xp on the computer first, and then run win 7 from desktop and that worked ok, but you shouldn’t have to do that. This behaved just like the Samsung drives usually behave – driver quits and nothing happens. Just for completeness, I reinstalled the now partitioned and formatted Samsung drive into the PC in place of the Western Digital drive and managed to achieve the same result.
